Abuse and violence

Abuse and violence

Physical or emotional abuse and violence can have devastating and long lasting consequences on our lives. It affects how we feel about ourselves, how we feel about other people and how we feel about the world around us. It can lead to depression, anxiety and low self-esteem, relationship and sexual difficulties and suicidal thoughts.

If the abuse happened in childhood, the impact continues into adulthood, with many people struggling as adults in silence, afraid to tell anyone, ashamed, confused about what happened and believing “it was my fault”.

As a result of the abuse, we can develop ways of coping with the overwhelming emotions which may include self-harm, eating disorders, drinking or drug taking.

Talking to a counsellor who is trained in working with trauma and abuse can help you make sense of what happened, process some of the confusing and difficult feelings and then ‘integrate’ these experiences so that we can move on with our lives.

I have specialist knowledge and training in helping people who have survived abuse and violence. My starting point is to help you feel ‘safe’ in the present, and I can share information with you on how to manage the difficult feelings and experiences, including ‘flashbacks’ (images, thoughts etc of the abuse at the time it happened), panic and anxiety if these are relevant to you.

I can help you explore how what happened impacts on your life now and what you want to change about your life now.

When and if you are ready, I can help you explore and understand what happened.

Whilst nothing can change the fact that the abuse happened, with time and courage it is possible to reach a place where you can understand and accept what happened and be able to leave it in the past, so that you can start to live more ‘fully’ in the present and look forward to the future.
